A Derby shoe with a chunky outdoor sole and drawstring laces is not something I would normally expect to find in my wardrobe. Then again, MM6 Maison Margiela has never been particularly interested in making fashion predictable.

The new MM6 Crossderby is the piece that caught my eye in the latest collection from MM6 Maison Margiela and Salomon. Its glossy black leather upper borrows from traditional dress shoes, while the outdoor sole and Salomon’s drawstring lacing system take it somewhere rather less conventional. I can already picture it with oversized tailoring, wide-leg trousers or a long black skirt. It is the sort of shoe that could make an otherwise straightforward outfit far more interesting.

First launched in 2022, the partnership returns this season with two drops, bringing the Crossderby together with fresh colourways of the XT-MM6, an updated puffer-inspired boot and new versions of the ACS Pro 3.

The first drop also brings back the XT-MM6 in three new colourways: Vanilla Ice/Ftw Silver/Lemon, Tapioca/Sea Foam/Violet and Scarab/Bistro Green/Green. Drawing on Salomon’s XT line, the shoe combines its recognisable outdoor design with the brand’s ACS stability system and Energy Cell cushioning. The colours range from bright lemon and silver accents to deeper greens, giving the familiar silhouette a few new ways to stand out.

The XT-15 backpack returns alongside the footwear, complete with a white rain cover bearing a black logo.

Then there is the MM6 XT-Boot, which takes its cues from something you might be more accustomed to seeing in your winter wardrobe than on your feet.

Building on an earlier version, the boot features a soft inner shoe that wraps around the foot, with an upper inspired by the hood of a puffer jacket. It can be worn open around the calf or drawn closer to the leg, changing its appearance depending on how you wear it.

I rather like the idea of a boot borrowing its shape from outerwear. It has enough personality to carry an outfit on its own, so I would keep the rest relatively simple. The black version, in Black/Black/Silver, would be my choice with a short skirt, sheer tights and an oversized leather jacket. A long skirt would work just as well, allowing the boot to peek out as you walk. The Vanilla/Black/Dusty Yellow version would be an interesting alternative against an all-black outfit.

The second drop introduces two new colourways of the ACS Pro 3: Urban Chic/Black/Green and Cosmic Sky/Heron/Violet. The first keeps to a darker palette, while the second brings together blue, grey and violet.

With MM6 designer Heikki Salonen also serving as creative director of Salomon, there is an interesting connection between the two brands beyond the shoes themselves. One brings an unconventional approach to fashion, while the other has spent years developing footwear for the outdoors. Here, neither side seems particularly interested in playing it safe.

The first drop arrives on 22 October 2026, followed by the second on 17 November 2026.
